From a Cluttered Desk

Tammy CardwellI am Tammy Cardwell, she of the cluttered desk. (Hey, you think I'm kidding?!) I'm having a blast here in Blogland and invite to you to peruse my ramblings. Like a buffet, they offer variety - essentially whatever makes it to the top of the piles that sometimes clutter my brain. We'll eventually cover it all - homeschooling, God, our church, the Eclectic Homeschool Online, books I'm writing and publishing, conferences I speak at, the joys of grandmotherhood, and hopefully chocolate. Of course, this is only what's near the top now. Who knows what's in those piles?

“Thanks” for A Homeschool that Handles the Hard Times

Filed under: CJ Press, New Releases — TammyC @ 7:02 pm

I’ve been so blessed. We at CJ Press recently released my newest eBook, A Homeschool that Handles the Hard Times: A Guide for Christian Homeschoolers, and immediately made it a part of the Estes benefit (Which was a HUGE blessing to that family, by the way!). On Saturday, I received the following email.

Tammy,

I got your new book - A Homeschool That Handles the Hard Times - when I gave to the Estes benefit. I just read it and I wanted to let you know how much I was blessed by it. Thanks for taking the time to write it and thanks for making it available through this benefit.

God bless,

Kathleen

Teaching History with Biography

Filed under: CJ Press, Homeschooling, New Releases — TammyC @ 12:28 pm

It’s no secret that I love history. In fact, EHO just published the first of a two-part article series I’ve written entitled Loving History. One of the things I share in this article is my appreciation of biography. Now, I’ve enjoyed biography most of my life anyway, but when I started using biography in our homeschool I really saw what it accomplishes. With biography, you learn much more than facts about an individual’s life. You learn about the world they lived it. You learn about the way people were affected by world events, by inventions, by catastrophes… Truly, as I see it, there is nothing so powerful as biography when it comes to teaching history.

So I want to take a minute to recommend one of my products, Some Successful Americans. Originally published in 1904, this collection  written by Sherman Williams specifically shares biographies of self-made men and women, people who started life in less than ideal circumstances and proceeded to make a mark on the world. Through their life stories, you can learn much about what it takes to be successful - which is why Williams wrote the book in the first place. He wanted to encourage the youth of his time, young men and women who looked to their futures and could not see themselves ever amounting to anything. Whether you’re young or old, you cannot read these life stories and not be inspired. In fact, I, being in my mid-forties, was particularly impressed with Cornelius Vanderbilt, who chose to make a major career change when he was almost 70!

Some Successful Americans is available from my publishing company, CJ Press, in eBook format. It includes all of the original photographs and biographies (Abraham Lincoln, Peter Cooper, Mary Lyon, Horace Greeley, Cyrus Hall McCormick, Frances Willard, Louisa M. Alcott, Alexander H. Stephens, Leland Stanford, Charles Pratt, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Eli Whitney, Henry Clay, and Benjamin Franklin) and it’s only $7.95, which in today’s world is a bargain.

I work hard to produce and share products that are of genuine value and help to those I serve, and I am particularly pleased with this one. I trust you will be too.

We’ve been REALLY busy around here!

Today we released an ebook version of  Why the Chimes Rang, a children’s picture book that was originally published in 1909 and contains some of the most beautiful artwork I’ve ever seen. If you want a special gift for your favorite little someone, consider picking up this gem from a century ago. It’s priceless!

Meditations on the Word

Filed under: New Releases — TammyC @ 4:43 pm

Meditations on the Word is online at last!

This is the culmination of years of work. You may not think so since it’s not huge or anything, but I began it years ago, finished it a few months ago (after picking it up and putting it down far too many times) and only now have actually published it.

And it’s here, on this site, free for your reading and, I hope, edification. You’ll find it in the Publisher section under Online Books.

I have had the best time since we went live with the site. Learning new things is not always my favorite activity, but the satisfaction that comes when I’m able to take those new skills and apply them to something as big and powerful as this site can be? That is truly a wonderful thing.

And now I’m off to the next thing!
